I have worked in a palliative care setting since 2013. Each week I support patients and their families to navigate the acute emotional distress surrounding death and dying.
In bereavement, clients often ask me if the distress they’re feeling is ‘normal’ because they worry they are ‘becoming mad with sadness’ and are scared that the pain of grief will never subside – and what it might mean for them if it does.
Grieving clients often feel overwhelmed by the many physical, emotional, behavioural and cognitive symptoms that can be part of their experience. Often those grieving feel very alone as they watch friends and family seemingly ‘moving on’ with everyday life; this can lead to a sense of isolation and abandonment.
The aim of my new six-week bereavement therapy programme is to combine an understanding of what you are experiencing in grief, whilst connecting you to others who truly understand what you are going through. In a safe, non-judgmental, confidential environment, the group can share stories and perhaps build an ongoing network of new friendships.
Each week I will start the session with a look at an aspect of the complexities of grief, based both on models of therapy but also drawing on over 10 years of my personal experience working with bereavement. This initial presentation/talk will be followed by group discussion, with therapeutic interventions and support.
